William Moulton Marston: The Psychologist Who Gave Us the Lie Detector...and Wonder Woman
Few psychologists have left a legacy as unusual as Dr. William Moulton Marston (1893–1947). Most researchers are remembered for journal articles or theories tucked away in textbooks. Marston's ideas escaped the laboratory and entered popular culture, eventually creating one of the world's most recognizable superheroes. Along the way, he helped shape early deception research, became associated with the invention of the lie detector, promoted controversial theories about human behavior, and created a heroine whose magical Lasso of Truth remains one of psychology's most recognizable symbols.
Ironically, the man most closely associated with lie detection also provides one of the best examples of why modern psychology has become deeply skeptical of lie detectors.

William Moulton Marston was born in 1893 and studied psychology at Harvard University, where he earned both his law degree and his Ph.D. in psychology. At a time when psychology was still establishing itself as a scientific discipline, Marston became fascinated by one deceptively simple question:

Can the body reveal when someone is lying?

Rather than studying deception through observation alone, Marston believed emotions produced measurable physiological changes. If lying created emotional tension, perhaps those bodily reactions could reveal deception. This idea eventually launched one of the longest-running and most controversial research programs in psychology.

Marston's career was anything but conventional. He taught at several universities, consulted for businesses, wrote popular psychology books, worked in advertising, testified as an expert witness, and eventually became a comic book writer. His professional interests stretched across personality, emotion, legal psychology, feminism, media, and persuasion. He also proposed an early personality framework that eventually influenced the later DISC model of personality, although today's DISC assessments differ substantially from Marston's original theoretical writings.

Marston's doctoral research examined systolic blood pressure during emotional questioning. He argued that deception frequently produced increases in blood pressure because lying generated emotional conflict. His work demonstrated that physiological responses could be measured systematically during questioning.

Much of this engineering was completed by John Larson and later refined by Leonarde Keeler, who developed the recognizable multi-channel polygraph instrument used for decades in criminal investigations. Marston often received public credit for "inventing" the lie detector, but historians generally regard him as one important contributor rather than its sole inventor.
Marston eventually became frustrated that scientific writing reached relatively few people. Comic books, however, reached millions. In 1941 he introduced Wonder Woman, believing children needed a hero who represented intelligence, compassion, courage, and female leadership rather than brute force. Many elements of Wonder Woman came directly from Marston's psychological theories.

The Lasso of Truth

The famous Lasso of Truth is essentially a fantasy polygraph. Anyone caught in the lasso must tell the truth. Unlike real lie detectors, however, Wonder Woman's lasso actually works. The lasso reflects Marston's lifelong fascination with honesty, emotional transparency, and the relationship between truth and human behavior.

These reflected Marston's belief that emotional intelligence represented genuine strength. The comics also contained themes that were unusually progressive for the early 1940s, emphasizing women's leadership and capability at a time when most superheroes were male. Scholars also note that Marston's unconventional personal life and views on sexuality influenced aspects of the comics, including recurring imagery involving restraint and liberation.
At first glance, polygraphs appear to have a solid scientific foundation. Most people who intentionally deceive someone experience at least some degree of emotional arousal. Lying can produce anxiety, fear, increased heart rate, sweating, elevated blood pressure, and changes in breathing. These are all genuine physiological responses controlled by the autonomic nervous system, and they are easily measured with modern equipment. Because these bodily changes often accompany deception, it seems reasonable to assume that they could reveal whether someone is telling the truth.

The difficulty is that none of these physiological responses are unique to deception. The exact same bodily reactions occur when a person is nervous, embarrassed, angry, startled, speaking in front of an audience, taking an important examination, or worried about being falsely accused of a crime. In other words, the body responds to emotional arousal rather than deception itself. This distinction represents the fundamental scientific limitation of polygraph testing.

What Does a Polygraph Actually Measure?

Modern polygraphs do not detect lies directly. Instead, they simultaneously record several physiological measures, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, and galvanic skin response, which measures changes in perspiration through the electrical conductivity of the skin. These instruments provide accurate measurements of physiological activity, but there is one critical measurement they cannot make: whether a person is lying. There is no biological signal that uniquely indicates deception. Instead, trained examiners must interpret changes in physiological arousal and infer whether those changes suggest deception. It is this interpretive leap—from measuring arousal to concluding someone is lying—that has generated decades of scientific controversy.

The Central Scientific Problem
​
Consider two individuals who are each asked the same question: "Did you steal the money?" The first person is guilty and responds, "No." As they answer, their heart rate increases, their blood pressure rises, and they begin to sweat. The second person is completely innocent but is terrified that no one will believe them. They give the same answer—"No"—and experience nearly identical physiological changes, including an elevated heart rate, increased blood pressure, and sweating. To the polygraph, these two individuals may appear virtually identical because the machine records physiological activation rather than the reason behind it. It cannot distinguish whether the body's response reflects guilt, fear, anxiety, embarrassment, anger, surprise, excitement, or some combination of these emotions. Physiology reveals that a person is emotionally aroused; it does not reveal why they are aroused.

The Control Question Test
​
The most commonly used polygraph procedure in criminal investigations is known as the Control Question Test (CQT). During this examination, individuals are asked several different types of questions. Relevant questions focus directly on the crime under investigation, such as, "Did you steal the missing money?" Irrelevant questions involve simple factual information with obvious answers, such as, "Is today Monday?" The examiner also asks comparison, or control, questions that concern past behaviors nearly everyone has engaged in at some point, such as, "Have you ever lied to someone who trusted you?"

The logic behind the Control Question Test is that innocent individuals should be more concerned about the broad comparison questions because they may remember instances when they behaved dishonestly in the past. Guilty individuals, however, are expected to react more strongly to questions directly related to the crime they committed. Examiners compare physiological responses across these different types of questions and use those patterns to determine whether deception is likely. Although this approach has been widely used for decades, critics argue that it relies on assumptions about how people think and feel during questioning. Individuals differ considerably in their emotional reactions, and there is no universal physiological pattern that consistently distinguishes deception from other forms of emotional stress.

The Concealed Information Test
​
Many deception researchers consider the Concealed Information Test (CIT) to have a stronger scientific foundation than the traditional Control Question Test. Rather than asking whether someone is lying, the Concealed Information Test examines whether an individual recognizes information that only the guilty person should know. For example, investigators might ask which weapon was used in a crime and present several possible answers, such as a hammer, rope, knife, pipe, or baseball bat. If only the guilty individual knows that the weapon was a knife, recognizing that correct answer may trigger a measurable physiological response.

The important distinction is that the Concealed Information Test measures recognition rather than deception. A physiological reaction suggests familiarity with crime-related information, not necessarily that the person is lying. Because recognition memory is generally easier to study than deception itself, many researchers view the CIT as a more scientifically defensible approach. However, its usefulness depends on investigators possessing details that have not been made public and would be unknown to innocent individuals.

Can People Beat a Polygraph?

Another challenge for polygraph testing is the possibility of using countermeasures to manipulate physiological responses. Research has shown that some individuals can intentionally alter their bodily reactions through techniques such as controlling their breathing, performing mental arithmetic, tensing muscles, pressing their toes against the floor to create mild discomfort, or deliberately shifting their emotional focus. These strategies can either increase physiological responses during comparison questions or reduce differences between comparison and relevant questions, making the results more difficult to interpret. Although experienced examiners attempt to identify these countermeasures, research suggests they are not always successful, further reducing confidence in polygraph accuracy.

What Does Modern Research Tell Us?

Contemporary research on deception has largely moved beyond the search for a single "lie response." The scientific review by Verschuere and colleagues (2022) concludes that there is no unique physiological or behavioral marker that reliably identifies deception in every situation. Instead, deception is influenced by numerous interacting factors, including cognitive demands, emotional state, motivation, memory, social context, and individual differences. Modern researchers increasingly view deception as a complex psychological process rather than a single biological event.

One of the most consistent findings is that lying often requires greater mental effort than telling the truth. A deceptive individual must suppress truthful information, construct an alternative account, maintain consistency, and monitor the listener's reactions, all of which increase cognitive load. However, the extent of this increased mental effort varies across situations. High-stakes lies, for example, differ substantially from everyday "white lies," and some individuals become highly anxious while lying whereas others remain remarkably calm. Likewise, many truthful individuals become extremely nervous simply because they are being questioned. Researchers have also found that common stereotypes about deception—such as avoiding eye contact, fidgeting, or appearing nervous—are poor indicators of dishonesty when considered alone. As a result, many experts now advocate combining strategic interviewing techniques, careful evidence analysis, and multiple independent sources of information rather than relying solely on physiological measurements.

Are Polygraphs Accurate?
​
Whether polygraphs are considered accurate depends largely on how accuracy is defined. Under carefully controlled laboratory conditions, researchers have demonstrated that polygraph testing can perform better than chance when participants are instructed to lie under standardized circumstances. Real-world investigations, however, are far more complicated. Suspects vary in motivation, stress levels, emotional reactions, personality, and prior experiences, all of which influence physiological responses. Consequently, false positives, in which truthful individuals are incorrectly classified as deceptive, and false negatives, in which deceptive individuals are judged truthful, remain persistent concerns. For these reasons, many courts either limit or exclude polygraph evidence, and the majority of psychologists do not regard traditional polygraph testing as a definitive scientific measure of deception.

Marston's Greatest Legacy

Ironically, William Moulton Marston's most enduring contribution may not be his work on lie detection but rather the cultural icon he created. Nearly a century after his early research, the scientific validity of the polygraph continues to be debated, while Wonder Woman remains one of the most recognizable superheroes in the world. Her famous Lasso of Truth symbolizes Marston's lifelong fascination with honesty, justice, and the psychology of human behavior. Although later research has shown that physiological arousal cannot reliably distinguish truth from deception, Marston's broader impact on psychology and popular culture has endured.

Marston's story ultimately demonstrates an essential principle of science. Innovative ideas often inspire new avenues of research, but even the most compelling hypotheses must withstand rigorous empirical testing. The history of the polygraph reminds us that measuring physiological responses is not the same as measuring truth itself.
