The implication is exciting: if we could somehow unlock the remaining 90%, we might develop photographic memories, superhuman intelligence, or even psychic abilities. There's just one problem. It's completely false.

 

Modern neuroscience has overwhelmingly demonstrated that we use all of our brains. While not every neuron is active at the same time, every major region of the brain has an important function and is active at different times throughout the day.

 

Where Did the Myth Come From?

No one knows exactly who started the 10% myth. Several possible origins have been suggested:

  • A misunderstanding of comments made by psychologist William James, who wrote that people rarely reach their full mental potential. He was talking about human potential, not unused brain tissue.

Over time, the idea spread through popular culture because it made for an inspiring story. If 90% of your brain were sitting idle, perhaps there was unlimited hidden potential waiting to be unlocked. Unfortunately, science doesn't work that way.

 

What Does Brain Imaging Show?

These techniques consistently show that different parts of the brain become active depending on what you're doing. Reading activates networks involved in vision, language, and memory. Walking activates motor areas, the cerebellum, and regions responsible for balance.

In other words, we don't use just 10% of our brain—we use different parts for different jobs.

One of the strongest arguments against the myth comes from medicine. If 90% of the brain were unnecessary, damage to most of the brain should have little effect. Instead, neurologists know that injury to even very small brain regions can produce devastating consequences. Damage to a tiny area may result in:

  • Memory impairment

  • Difficulty recognizing faces

  • Problems regulating emotions

 

Neurosurgeons carefully map the brain before surgery because even removing a small amount of healthy tissue can permanently affect important abilities.

 

Your Brain Is Expensive

Another reason the myth doesn't make biological sense is energy. Although the brain accounts for only about 2% of your body weight, it consumes roughly 20% of your body's energy while you're at rest. From an evolutionary perspective, maintaining an organ that uses so much energy would be incredibly wasteful if 90% of it served no purpose. Natural selection tends to eliminate structures that require large amounts of energy without providing a survival advantage. Your brain is simply too metabolically expensive to keep around if most of it were doing nothing.

 

So Why Doesn't the Whole Brain Light Up at Once?

Those colorful images don't show which parts of the brain exist—they show which regions are especially active during a specific task. Imagine looking at a city from above at night. Different networks become more active depending on whether you're solving a math problem, remembering a vacation, recognizing a face, or planning dinner. In fact, if every neuron in your brain fired at the same time, you wouldn't become a genius—you would likely experience a seizure.

Why Does the Myth Refuse to Die?

The 10% myth persists because it is hopeful. People like believing they possess enormous hidden abilities waiting to be unlocked.

Movies such as Lucy have helped keep the myth alive by suggesting that accessing more of the brain would lead to extraordinary powers. The reality is actually more interesting. Your brain is already operating continuously, coordinating billions of neurons every second. Intelligence doesn't come from activating unused brain tissue—it comes from the efficiency and complexity of the connections among the neurons you already have.

 

The Real Untapped Potential

Although we don't have unused brain regions waiting to be activated, that doesn't mean we can't improve our abilities.

The brain remains remarkably adaptable throughout life through neuroplasticity—its ability to strengthen existing connections and form new ones in response to learning and experience. Learning a language, practicing an instrument, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and challenging yourself intellectually can all improve how efficiently your brain functions. The opportunity isn't in unlocking a hidden 90%. It's in making the most of the 100% you already use.
