Are Boys and Girls Born as Blank Slates?
One of the most common misconceptions in psychology is that boys and girls are essentially identical at birth and that any differences between them are created entirely by parents, teachers, toys, or culture. While our environment unquestionably shapes who we become, modern developmental science shows that this is only part of the story. Biological differences between males and females begin long before birth, and researchers have identified measurable differences in behavior, brain development, and hormone exposure during infancy—before extensive socialization has had time to exert its influence.
Recognizing these early differences does not mean that every boy or every girl will behave the same way. In fact, psychologists consistently find that the differences within each sex are often much larger than the average differences between the sexes. Biology influences development, but it does not determine destiny. Human behavior emerges from a complex interaction between biology and experience.

The Myth of the Blank Slate
The idea that children are born as psychological "blank slates" has existed in various forms for centuries. According to this view, boys and girls begin life with essentially identical minds, and any later differences are produced entirely by culture, parenting, education, and gender expectations.
Modern psychology paints a more nuanced picture.
From conception onward, males and females develop under different hormonal environments. Genes carried on the X and Y chromosomes influence fetal development, while hormones such as testosterone and estrogen begin affecting the developing brain before birth. These biological influences do not create rigid behavioral categories, but they do contribute to differences that researchers can observe during infancy.
Differences Appear Earlier Than Many People Realize
If socialization were the only explanation for sex differences, researchers would expect boys and girls to behave similarly immediately after birth.
Instead, some differences appear surprisingly early.

Certain aspects of social behavior during the first months of life
For example, some research suggests that newborn girls, on average, spend slightly more time attending to faces, whereas newborn boys may spend more time attending to moving mechanical objects.
These differences are small, and there is substantial overlap between boys and girls, but they appear before years of gender-specific experiences have accumulated.
Similarly, researchers have documented differences in fetal growth, birth weight, and patterns of early brain development that are present before a child has experienced meaningful cultural influences.
Biology Starts Before Birth
One reason these differences emerge so early is that brain development begins long before birth.
During prenatal development, sex hormones influence the formation of neural circuits involved in movement, perception, and emotional regulation. Researchers continue to investigate exactly how these biological factors interact with later experiences, but there is broad agreement that prenatal development contributes to later behavioral differences.
This does not mean the brain is "hardwired" in a fixed way. The human brain is remarkably plastic, meaning it continues changing in response to learning and experience throughout life.
Instead, prenatal biology provides a starting point upon which experience continues to build.

Nature and Nurture Work Together

Perhaps the biggest mistake people make is treating biology and environment as competing explanations.
Psychologists no longer view development as an "either-or" question. Instead, they emphasize the constant interaction between nature and nurture.
Imagine two children who show a slight biological difference in activity level. Adults may respond differently to those behaviors without even realizing it. Those responses influence future behavior, which in turn influences how adults respond next.
Over time, small initial differences can become larger through continuous interactions between biology and experience.
Researchers sometimes describe this as a developmental feedback loop.
Biology influences experience, and experience changes biology. Neither operates independently.

Average Differences Are Not Rules

One of the most important lessons from this research is that average differences do not describe individuals.
Even when researchers find statistically reliable sex differences, the distributions usually overlap substantially.

Many girls outperform the average boy on spatial tasks.

Many boys outperform the average girl on verbal tasks.

Some children show personality characteristics that are traditionally associated with the opposite sex, while others do not fit stereotypes at all.
Psychology studies averages because they help us understand populations—not because they predict any one person's abilities, interests, or future.
In other words, saying that boys and girls differ on average is very different from saying that every boy or every girl will behave in a particular way.

Why This Matters
Understanding that biology contributes to development does not diminish the importance of parenting, education, or culture. Instead, it helps explain why development is often so complex.
Children arrive in the world with unique temperaments, genetic predispositions, and biological characteristics. Families, schools, friendships, and communities then shape those characteristics over time.
Appreciating both influences allows psychologists to better understand learning, mental health, child development, and individual differences.
The goal is not to place children into rigid categories but to recognize that both biology and experience contribute to the remarkable diversity of human development.
The Bottom Line
The myth that boys and girls begin life as completely identical blank slates is not supported by modern developmental science. Research shows that biological differences begin before birth and can be detected during infancy, long before years of socialization have occurred.
At the same time, biology is not destiny. Early differences are generally averages with substantial overlap, and every child develops through a continuous interaction between genetic influences, prenatal development, family experiences, education, culture, and individual choices.
Psychologists no longer ask whether nature or nurture matters.
