If you've spent any time in a classroom over the past few decades, you've probably heard statements like these. The idea that every person has a unique learning style—and that teaching should be tailored to match it—has become one of the most widespread beliefs in education.
The problem?
The research simply doesn't support it.

Where Did the Idea Come From?
The concept of learning styles became popular in the 1970s and 1980s as researchers proposed that individuals have preferred ways of taking in information.
One of the best-known models is VARK, which categorizes learners as

📖 Read / Write
✋ Kinesthetic
The theory seems intuitive. After all, people clearly have preferences. Some enjoy watching demonstrations, while others prefer reading or learning through hands-on practice.
But there's an important distinction between preference and effectiveness.

What Does the Research Actually Say?
For the learning styles theory to be true, two things would need to happen:
✅ People would need to have a stable, measurable learning style.
✅ Students should learn better when instruction is matched to that learning style.
After decades of research, scientists have found little to no evidence supporting either claim.
The University of Michigan's Center for Research on Learning and Teaching summarizes the evidence well: while people certainly have learning preferences, there is no convincing evidence that teaching students according to those preferences improves learning outcomes.
Numerous carefully designed studies have failed to find that matching instruction to a student's supposed learning style leads to better understanding, retention, or academic performance.
In fact, researchers have identified more than 50 different learning style theories, many of which contradict one another.
Most rely on self-report questionnaires that ask students how they think they learn best rather than objectively measuring how they actually learn.
As a result, these assessments often measure preference—not an innate learning style.
Why Does the Myth Persist?

The idea remains popular because it offers a simple explanation for a complex process.
If students struggle, it's comforting to think they simply haven't been taught "their way."
Unfortunately, learning doesn't work that way.
Research suggests that what matters most is the content being learned—not a student's preferred modality.
Some skills are naturally learned visually, such as interpreting graphs or anatomical diagrams.
Others require listening, discussion, reading, or physical practice.
The most effective instructional method depends on the material, not on assigning students to categories like "visual learner" or "auditory learner."
Does This Mean Everyone Learns the Same Way?
Absolutely not.
People differ in many meaningful ways.

What research rejects is the idea that each person has a fixed learning style that teachers should match.
Students also benefit from multimodal instruction—using diagrams, explanations, demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on activities together.
This isn't because each student has a particular learning style.
It's because presenting information in multiple ways helps all learners build richer mental connections and maintain attention.
Why the Myth Can Be Harmful
Although believing in learning styles may seem harmless, it can actually limit learning.
Students who believe they are "visual learners" may avoid activities involving reading, discussion, or listening because they assume those methods won't work for them.
Likewise, educators may spend valuable time trying to tailor lessons to unsupported learning style categories instead of using evidence-based teaching strategies.
Learning is flexible.
Our brains are remarkably adaptable, and most people can learn effectively through a variety of methods when instruction is well designed.

What Does Work?
Educational research has consistently found stronger evidence for strategies such as:

✔ Spaced Practice
✔ Interleaving Different Topics
✔ Elaborating on Ideas
✔ Using Multiple Representations
These techniques improve learning because they strengthen memory and understanding—not because they cater to a particular learning style.
The Bottom Line
The idea of learning styles has become deeply embedded in education, but decades of research have failed to support its central claim.
While everyone has preferences for how they like to receive information, those preferences do not determine how well they learn.
Rather than asking:
"What's my learning style?"
A better question is:
"What learning strategy works best for this particular task?"
That shift in thinking is supported by decades of cognitive science and can help students become more flexible, effective learners.
